This course provides an in-depth study of human anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology as directly applied to surgical assisting across multiple surgical specialties. Emphasis is placed on integrating anatomical structures, physiological mechanisms, and disease processes with operative interventions and patient outcomes. Students will analyze organ system interrelationships, surgical pathology, and perioperative considerations, and correlate diagnostic findings with surgical procedures. The course bridges theoretical knowledge with clinical application, preparing students to competently assist with preoperative preparation, intraoperative procedures, and postoperative management. Aligned with the Core Curriculum for Surgical Assisting (4th ed., pp. 28-34), the course incorporates detailed study of the thoracic, abdominal, pelvic, and musculoskeletal systems, as well as neurovascular and endocrine structures, with an emphasis on surgical anatomy and physiology relevant to operative exposure, tissue management, and hemostasis. Students apply critical thinking to anticipate surgeon needs, ensure patient safety, and demonstrate professional judgment consistent with ethical and legal standards. Upon completion, students will be able to apply foundational and advanced knowledge of human structure and function to surgical practice, perform first-assist responsibilities with precision and professionalism, and communicate effectively within the interdisciplinary surgical team.
