HEPE 119
Scuba Training
Augustana College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
HEPE 119 - Scuba Training 1 cr. (PEA) You will learn the basics of SCUBA Diving, but you need to be able to swim (pass an initial swim/float test) to take the course. This seven-week course is open to all students, faculty and staff of Augustana College; however, enrollment is only by permission of course supervisor, Dr. Michael Wolf - priority is given to students enrolled in the Bonaire Program J-Term Study Abroad experience (GEOL-123 or GEOL-321) or the Caribbean marine geoscience Bonaire research experience. Students signing up for the GEOL-119 SCUBA Training (zero credit) alternative version do not receive Augustana College credit nor PEA (Physical Education Activity) credit. You do not have to complete the optional certification in order to receive Augustana credit (1 cr) for the HEPE- 119 course. However, certification as a PADI Open Water Diver requires successful completion of the four open water training dives (after successfully completing the course). The cost of these weekend dives (time and place TBA) is included in the lab fee ($250) that all participants must pay, but you are responsible for the additional travel, lodging and lake entry fees (~$100 total) to become SCUBA-certified. Lab fee required for both HEPE-119 (1 cr.) and GEOL-119 (0 cr.): $250, for textbook purchase and gear rental. No additional equipment is required. Contact Dr. Michael Wolf for additional information about the Caribbean coral reef research experience or the available Geology Dept. scholarships.
