Catalog description

(PL) "Slapstick & Satire: Greek and Roman Comedy" offer insights into the social, political, and religious issues of Classical antiquity through the lens of comedy. Students will read representative comic plays from Aristophanes, Menander, Plautus, and Terence, examining them in their historical moment, and considering particulars of production and staging while also looking at their continuing influence on our own comic productions. We will also consider other forms of humor, such as Martial's epigrams or the satires of Horace and Juvenal.
