Oral Motor, Feeding, and Neurologically Based Pediatric Dysphagia (with Lab)

Catalog description

Students are trained in assessing and managing feeding and motor speech disorders from infancy to adolescence. This course covers analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of etiologies, characteristics, anatomical/physiological, neurophysiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic/cultural correlates of pediatric feeding, eating, and swallowing. Explore the three phases of swallowing (oral, pharyngeal, esophageal), oral-motor function, reflux, sensory and feeding aversions, and Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS). Topics include: craniofacial anomalies and genetic disorders resulting in swallowing disorders. This course also includes a discussion of the nature, etiology, diagnosis, and management of motor speech disorders with emphasis on differential diagnosis and treatment across all settings. Topics include: executive function, learning, attention, and processing. Learning will be facilitated through lectures, observation, discussion, and hands-on lab clinical competencies.
