Catalog description

The aerodigestive tract includes the airway (pharynx and larynx), pulmonary tract (trachea, bronchi, and lungs), and upper digestive tract (esophagus). This graduate-level course complements SLPP 5201 and covers the initial formal education of swallowing and swallowing disorders. Course materials (lectures, readings, simulations, labs, and assignments) cover normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology related to swallowing function across the lifespan and in various patient populations. Emphasis is placed on the fundamental competency skills required to complete and accurately document the diagnostic procedures via instrumental evaluations using professional-grade Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) to keep pace with the increased medical SLP service delivery needs. Diagnostic assessment and treatment of swallowing with hands-on experiential learning includes certification completion in the Modified Barium Swallowing Impairment Profile (MBSImp) program to develop a repertoire of best practices in interpreting swallowing function. Common patient populations are highlighted (e.g., neurologic, head and neck cancer, end of life, tracheostomy, and ventilated patients). This introductory level course in dysphagia provides students with the foundations of dysphagia that builds upon clinical externships, fellowships, and professional careers.
