Speech and Hearing Science

Catalog description

The general theme of this course will be to acquaint the student with an introduction to the physics of sounds and to the functioning of the vocal tract as a resonating system for speech production. Instruction will focus on the clinical application of principles of speech and hearing science to the evaluation and treatment of individuals with communication disorders. Students in this course will be able to define sound, simple harmonic motion, pressure waves, decibels, complex waves, resonance, and sound transmission and will learn the application of acoustics to speech production, spectrographic analysis, speech synthesis, as well as the relationship between acoustics, articulation, and resonance.
