This independent study course is designed for advanced graduate students seeking to engage in focused, self-directed research aligned with their dissertation interests. It provides a structured yet flexible framework for students to explore a specialized topic in depth, under the guidance of a faculty advisor. The primary objective is to guide students in working towards the development of a publishable scholarly paper, while also serving as a preparatory platform for comprehensive examinations and the formulation of a dissertation prospectus. Throughout the course, students will refine their research questions, conduct a thorough literature review, and apply appropriate theoretical and methodological approaches to their chosen topic. Emphasis is placed on academic writing, critical analysis, and the development of original arguments that contribute meaningfully to the field. This elective is particularly well-suited for students towards the later stages of their didactic coursework and may serve as a launching point for dissertation research.
