This course offers a graduate-level exploration of qualitative research methods in security studies, focusing on case studies and process tracing. Students engage in theoretical and practical applications of these methods, learning to design related research, analyze related data, and apply their findings to real-world security scenarios. Specifically, it focuses on case studies – in-depth examinations of single instances or events and their contexts – and process tracing – investigations of causal mechanisms behind sequences of events or actions that lead to a particular outcome in a specific case. Both methods are particularly valuable for understanding complex security issues and strategic outcomes. The course explores theoretical underpinnings, methodological approaches, and practical applications of these methods. Students learn when and how to effectively use case studies and process tracing, addressing issues of designing research, collecting and analyzing data, and reporting findings. The course focuses on theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on experience, enabling students to apply these methods to real-world security scenarios.
