Digital Surveillance and Control

Catalog description

This doctoral seminar provides a broad overview of how information technologies are transforming state surveillance and control worldwide. It addresses a wide range of policy-relevant issues, including but not limited to, the ways in which democracies and nondemocracies surveil their citizens in the age of new technologies, the role of big tech companies in digital control, strategies that users can adopt to resist digital surveillance, and gaps in current policy and legal frameworks. By the end of the course, students are expected to have developed the theoretical and analytical skills necessary to evaluate digital surveillance and control techniques in detail.
