Public Health Intelligence

Catalog description

This course explores the strategic role of public health intelligence in safeguarding population health and informing evidence-based policy and emergency response. Students will examine the systems, tools, and methodologies used to collect, analyze, and disseminate health-related data for decision-making at local, national, and global levels. Emphasis will be placed on the integration of epidemiological surveillance, biosurveillance, and health informatics to detect and respond to emerging threats, including pandemics, bioterrorism, and environmental hazards. The course also introduces the concept of medical intelligence, a specialized domain within public health intelligence that involves the collection and analysis of health-related information by national security and defense agencies to assess risks to military and civilian populations. Students will develop the skills to critically evaluate intelligence products, assess data quality and ethical considerations, and contribute to the design of resilient public health intelligence systems.
