Foreign Policy Analysis

This course offers a rigorous and interdisciplinary examination of the formulation, execution, and consequences of U.S. foreign policy. The course is designed to equip students with the theoretical, methodological, and empirical tools necessary to critically analyze how the United States engages with the world across diplomatic, military, economic, and ideological dimensions. Students will explore the historical evolution of U.S. foreign policy, the strategic logic underpinning key decisions, and the institutional and political processes that shape policy outcomes. The course emphasizes the interplay between domestic politics and international pressures, the role of individual decision-makers and bureaucratic actors, and the influence of ideas, identity, and norms in shaping American global behavior. Special attention is given to the national security implications of U.S. foreign policy, including how the United States responds to emerging threats, manages alliances, engages in great power competition, and navigates global governance structures.
