Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict

Introduction to the role played by nationalism and ethnic identity in international security. The course examines theories, analyzes case studies, and provides an overview of why these two forces are at the heart of some of the most intractable conflicts in the world. The course also examines the consequences of nationalist ideology and ethnic violence on states and the measures used by governments to offset the threat. The objective of the course is for students to acquire the tools and techniques needed to engage in a critical analysis of nationalism and ethnic identity in order to understand the part they play in generating conflict on the global stage.
