Catalog description

This course takes a pragmatic approach to the study of dental materials and their underlying scientific principles as they relate to clinical dentistry. Materials science theory is coupled with property-based knowledge of the three primary restorative material classes: polymers, ceramics, and metals. These fundamentals provide students with a sound understanding of the properties required in a given clinical situation and the ability to critically assess manufacturer claims regarding product suitability. The course also helps students troubleshoot potential clinical challenges by distinguishing technique-sensitive issues from those related to material selection or composition. The course consists of three parts: faculty-led lectures, adaptive learning modules, and small-group student seminars. Lectures are 1.5 hours long and focus on specific material-related topics. Adaptive learning modules present interactive, self-paced clinical scenarios that reinforce decision-making and application. Small-group student seminars simulate a flipped classroom environment, with topics selected by students and faculty based on contemporary clinical relevance.
