An introduction to the complexity of Indian politics. Examines the historical, cultural and institutional underpinnings of the Indian state and democracy. Various institutional mechanisms, the role of elites at the national and regional levels, and the challenges posed by the constantly changing patterns of caste, ethnic, and religious alliances as well as issues of economic development are explored. Prerequisite(s): POLS 1101 >= C or POLS 1101H >= C Lecture Hours: 3 Contact Hours: 45 Repeatability: May not be repeated for credit.
