Catalog description

This course is intended for students interested in critical care of infants and children. Students are assigned patients under the supervision of the critical care team and pediatric ICU attending. The focus of student teaching is to learn the basic skills needed for rapidly assessing and treating the critically ill child. Students are taught how to integrate a multiple organ systems approach to problem solving for such medical conditions as respiratory failure, shock, coma, pediatric trauma and care of the post-operative cardiac patient. This elective is NOT an acting internship. The setting is the Pediatric ICU at MCG Hospital. Those individuals interested in pediatrics, emergency medicine, anesthesiology or surgery are encouraged to enroll. Night call is arranged through the Pediatric ICU attending and average one night out of four. Lecture Hours: 12 Contact Hours: 50 Repeatability: May not be repeated for credit.
