Pediatric Gastroenterology Externship (4 to 8 Credit Hours)

Catalog description
This special elective provides the student an opportunity to participate in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and hepatic disease in children and adolescents (acute and chronic). Patients are seen in clinic, on the inpatient wards and through the operating rooms and endoscopy suite. Topics include acute and chronic diarrhea, recurrent abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis (acute and chronic), persistent vomiting, hyperbilirubinemia, gastrointestinal bleeding, constipation, enteral and parenteral nutrition. A directed reading list will be provided to supplement “hands-on” experience. Lecture Hours: 10 Contact Hours: 30 Repeatability: May not be repeated for credit.
