Bioethics in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Catalog description

This course delves into the ethical challenges in obstetrics and gynecology, blending both philosophical concepts and practical clinical applications. Through a combination of theoretical discussions, real-world case studies, and analysis of primary sources such as ACOG bulletins and PubMed articles, students will examine key ethical dilemmas in Ob/Gyn practice. Topics include reproductive justice, informed consent, assisted reproduction, professional ethics, and care for diverse populations, including same-sex couples and transgender individuals, as well as issues surrounding access to care. Students will engage in critical discussions that encourage thoughtful consideration of the balance between clinical recommendations and patient preferences. The course aims to equip students with the tools to navigate the complex ethical landscape in obstetrics and gynecology. The culmination of the course will be a written paper that synthesizes the student’s learning, providing an opportunity to contribute to the bioethics dialogue through submission to a journal or presentation at a professional conference.
