Visual Communication in Medicine

Catalog description

This 4-week, 8-credit hour elective course is designed for post-clerkship medical students interested in improving their communication with patients and colleagues through use of visuals. This course will equip medical students with the unique skills to implement visuals into their interaction with patients with the goal of enhancing communication of complex information, improving patient health literacy, and fostering trusting relationships. Through interactive workshops, role-playing, and reflective exercises, students will learn to communicate using visual tools. Topics include the use of illustrations, animations, 3D models, and hand-drawn sketches to enhance patient understanding and appropriate scenarios for each. Emphasis is placed on application to real-life scenarios, receiving personalized feedback, and developing a personal communication style that is both professional and compassionate. This course prepares students to become compassionate patient educators armed with unique and practical communication strategies. After this elective, 4 th -year medical students will be able to identify types of visual communication methods, develop their own artistic skills, and apply them to suitable scenarios for improving communication and patient literacy.
