Internal Medicine/Histology Elective

This 4 week, 8 credit hour course aims to strengthen already obtained histology and anatomy knowledge of select organ systems essential for students seeking to enter an Internal Medicine Residency. The course will allow students to rotate in six of the following subspecialty areas in Internal Medicine: Nephrology, Pulmonology, Gastrointestinal, Hematology/Oncology, Cardiology, and Rheumatology. Each week the student will participate with the subspecialty consulting team that conducts inpatient rounds in these particular disciplines of Internal Medicine. During this elective, the student will participate in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases frequently encountered by the Internist, which may include asthma and COPD, bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, acute and chronic kidney disease, urinary tract infections, anemias, and arthritis. During this 4-week course, the student (s) will also attend tumor boards to increase their knowledge base of malignancies (and their associated histopathology) that affect the various organ systems listed above.
