Education Policy Analysis and Research

Catalog description

Education policy is a dynamic and rapidly evolving field that has transformed significantly over the past three decades. The primary goal of this course is to introduce students to the concepts, methods, and tools of education policy analysis, while providing opportunities to apply these approaches to pressing, real-world policy issues. Students will engage with topics such as school choice, charter schools, teacher evaluation, accountability, equality in access, and the intersections of education policy with broader social policies, including health and housing. The course is structured in three parts. The first part introduces policy analysis as an analytic tool, with a focus on the steps in conducting a formal policy analysis. The second part emphasizes the application of social science research methods to evaluate the effectiveness and consequences of educational policies. The third part provides students the opportunity to explore and critique contemporary education policy issues in depth. Contact Hours: 3 Repeatability: May not be repeated for credit.
