Catalog description

For decades, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers have paid attention to the generation, distribution, and effective use of P-12 educational resources at local, state, and federal levels. Given the political scrutiny of federal funds and the variation across state education budgets, educational leaders and policymakers must understand how funding affects educational opportunity, identify possible resource reallocation to improve student learning, and discern the costs and benefits of financial investments in schooling. The central goal of this course is to introduce students to the economic concepts and theoretical frameworks necessary to address issues in education finance with attention to current policy debates such as teacher compensation and distribution, school vouchers, and funding formulas. Of note, this course welcomes graduate students with various backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge related to education finance. Lecture Hours: 3 Repeatability: May not be repeated for credit.
