A comprehensive introduction and overview to the social scientific study of the police, criminal investigations, investigative techniques. The advent of the police and their changing role in American society are examined. Major topics include: the historical foundations of the American police, the variability in both police officers and the structure of law enforcement organizations, the nature and realities of police work, various issues confronting the police in a democratic context, and future trends and directions in policing practice and research.
