CHEM 4410
Heterocyclic and Natural Product Chemistry
Augusta University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
An in-depth exploration of the structure, synthesis, nomenclature, and reactivity of heterocyclic compounds, focusing on key classes such as azoles (including pyrazoles, imidazoles, and triazoles), pyridines, indoles, quinolines, and other vital heterocyclic frameworks. Emphasis is placed on understanding the mechanisms and applications of name reactions in heterocyclic synthesis, including the Fischer indole synthesis, Hantzsch pyridine synthesis, Conrad-Limpach synthesis, and Knorr pyrrole synthesis. The course also comprehensively studies natural products, examining their biosynthetic pathways, structural diversity, and critical role in drug discovery and development. In the laboratory component, students synthesize, purify, and characterize heterocyclic and natural product compounds, gaining hands-on experience with modern synthetic techniques and advanced analytical methods. Prerequisite(s): CHEM 3412 >= C and CHEM 3412L >= C Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 3 Repeatability: May not be repeated for credit. Grade Mode: Normal, Audit Schedule Type (Primary): Lecture/Supervised Lab/Clinic Additional Course Fee: Chemistry/Biochemistry Lab Fee Fee Type: Flat Fee Fee Amount: $ 50 Click here for the Schedule of Classes.
