Research Design and Analysis in Anthropology

Catalog description

Students will be introduced to how anthropologists mix qualitative and quantitative research methods. Students will prepare for real-world fieldwork through hands-on activities, mini-projects, and critical reflection. Students will practice participant observation, in-depth interviews, oral histories, survey design, cultural consensus analysis, and Q methodology, while also learning essential data management techniques. Ethical research practices, including researcher positionality and responsibilities to communities, are foregrounded. Case studies from all four subfields of anthropology highlight the versatility of mixed methods. As part of the course, students will complete CITI training for human subjects research and develop their own mixed methods research proposal.
