Covers the basic principles, theories, conceptual tools, and comparative methods useful for understanding the challenges of democracy and democratization in both developed and developing countries. Explores the role of governments, international organizations, and nongovernmental groups in their efforts to strengthen the capacity of political institutions through encouraging multi-party competitive elections, independent judiciaries, and effective legislatures.
