Language Acquisition and Elements Of Linguistics

Catalog description

This course provides foundational knowledge of how language is acquired and how English functions as a linguistic system to support English Language Learners (ELLs) in PreK-12 settings. As part of the TESOL endorsement and certificate programs, candidates examine first and second language acquisition theories; cognitive, affective, sociocultural, and contextual influences on language learning; and core components of English linguistics, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and language variation. Candidates analyze learner language using linguistic and acquisition principles to inform instructional planning for literacy and content-area learning, while deepening their understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity in U.S. educational contexts.
