Pharmacology and Dosage Calculation

Catalog description

This course includes an introduction to the foundations of pharmacology, principles of drug properties, uses, action and interaction, and routes of administering medications. The student will be introduced to legal and ethical issues associated with medication administration. This course utilizes the nursing process/clinical judgement model with each body system to guide the students in learning drug actions, dosages, expected reactions, side effects, contraindications, infection control, and proper documentation. The student will learn proper reporting based on changes of client's condition. Basic dosage calculations for oral, topical, parenteral, transdermal, sublingual, and intranasal routes will be covered using dimensional analysis. Prerequisite: Admission to the PN Program.
