Residential Carpentry

Catalog description

An introduction to basic handling, storage, and installation of building materials, including safety protocols in residential and light construction. Students will gain knowledge regarding standard equipment, tools and materials used in the industry, including the ability to accurately measure, mark, and cut materials using basic construction math, components, methods, and sequences used in residential and light commercial buildings. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of safety, math, tools, and carpentry related to the industry. This course will enable students to identify and utilize tools, equipment, and materials common to the industry and perform basic entry-level carpentry skills involving design and installation of interior door and door casings, window jambs and sills, door and window trim, baseboards/baseshoes, crown molding, and stairs, including handrails. They will further explore the entire building envelope to include window types, jamb extensions, door installations, and lockset types and installations. Students will gain knowledge and skills gained in both the traditional classroom and in hands-on performance projects and will be able to identify various employment opportunities which utilize these skills.
