Medical Emergencies I with Laboratory

Catalog description

This course will present the student with a review of anatomy and physiology, an overview of pathophysiology, clinical assessment and treatment of patients presenting with specific illness. Critical thinking and clinical decision making, airway management, and assessment of respiratory, and neurology patients will be included in this section with an emphasis on assessment and management of present illness for effective field treatment. In addition, there will be a review of EMS systems, safety and wellness, public health, medical legal, communications, and documentation. The lab section will include performance of both basic and advanced prehospital airway management techniques, skill practice, scenario development, and high fidelity simulations ina lab environment. Students must successfully demonstrate each skill through a pass/fail scenario for successful course completion. Application of these skills will be reassessed in the clinical setting. This is the first of a series of three Medical Emergency courses required for the paramedic program. Lecture: 3 hours, Laboratory: 1 hour.
