First semester of the one-year intensive Japanese language sequence designed to train novice-level speakers to become competent intermediate speakers who can carry out conversation on familiar topics or handle straightforward situations. Emphasizes both oral and written communication through development of skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural awareness. Students manage a number of communicative tasks in social situations. Conversations are restricted to a few of the predictable topics necessary for survival; students express themselves in straightforward situations and on familiar topics.
