This introductory comparative cultural course explores Italy's history, culture, society and global influence. Topics include language and migration, food, art, made-in-Italy products and sustainability, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of Italy's historical, social and economic landscape. Examines Italy's contributions and influence in global contexts through comparative analysis, encouraging cross-cultural connections and reflections. Students engage in qualitative and quantitative analyses of course materials, including textual, visual and statistical data, to deepen their understanding of Italy's multifaceted cultural and societal dynamics. When possible, the materials offer the point of view of non-Italian residents of Italy (e.g., journalists stationed in Italy, study abroad students, expats). Students acquire basic Italian language skills for practical use while studying or traveling in Italy and develop cultural competencies--such as curiosity and openness--by exploring, analyzing and comparing Italian culture with their own. Requires no prior language knowledge. Complements language studies and prepares students for studying abroad or traveling to Italy.
