Examines the meanings of objects from the perspectives of design, material culture, philosophy and cultural studies. Covers such concepts as form language, planned obsolescence, object fetishism, product semantics, consumer value, production labor and user needs. Explains these ideas theoretically but also with case studies of historical and contemporary objects. Looks behind the scenes and beneath the surface at some of our most familiar and iconic objects.
