Covers geological studies as they apply to interactions between humans and Earth, focusing on geological hazards. Hazards present risks to life, property, global commerce and infrastructure. Such hazards are now more likely than ever to cause large death tolls and impact the global economy, due to increasing population density and the emergence of a global marketplace. Italy is a country that is exposed to a wide range of geologic hazards, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and landslides. Because of its natural geologic setting and long history of scientific leadership, Italy has one of the world's most well-established scientific communities to study and mitigate geologic hazards. These issues are addressed and discussed from both a scientific and human perspective, with primary focus placed on Italian case studies and the role of Italian institutions in hazard science.
