Catalog description

Explores the foundational concepts of trend forecasting by examining the world around us: society, culture, lifestyle and people. As an entry point into trend forecasting, teaches students how to look at the world around them and identify emerging trends, recognizing their distinction from niche ideas or fading concepts. Uses lecture and workshop formats to build an understanding of the basic principles of macro trends (i.e., society, culture, lifestyle and people), including extracting qualitative and quantitative insights from existing data and interpreting their meaning. Guides students through uses and intentions of macro-trend forecasting, beginning with developing an understanding of report purposes and formats, and advancing to developing their own macro-trend forecasts and future outlooks. Building on students' knowledge of macro-trend forecasts, students examine how emerging societal and lifestyle shifts act as indicators for fashion trends, drawing a connection between macro trends and fashion forecasts.
