Cinematography Aesthetics and Theory

Catalog description

Cinematography is often referred to as the art and craft of visual storytelling for moving images. Students study, research and apply the aesthetic terminology and techniques used in the art of cinematography, learning the theory and science behind the technical skills and tools they use to realize these aesthetic artistic decisions through the craft of cinematography. Places special emphasis on image reference analysis, lookbook creation, color theory, visual language and design, how lighting evokes emotion, the theory behind manual camera settings and controls, and how the proper use of these camera settings can be utilized for artistic expression. Builds on the foundational concepts introduced in earlier coursework, resulting in deeper understanding. Also acts as the aesthetic and theory companion course to other coursework which focuses primarily on the practical application of the theories and skills. Students further learn about and develop the skills necessary to act in supporting production roles on-set, such as AC, gaffer/lighting technician and key grip.
