What is a text? If a novel is a text, do we teach it differently as a physical book or on an e-reader? Or if we exist in a 'post-digital' world, what role does TikTok, Zines and other media play in today's classrooms? This course explores various methods for teaching texts (broadly construed) in secondary English Language Arts (ELA) contexts. Explores early analogue, recent digital and contemporary post-digital conceptualizations of text, and examines the impact of each on teaching. While this course is designed for current or future secondary English teachers, it holds theory and practice close together. Students learn research and analytical skills relevant to many disciplines, while also developing partitioner knowledge of pedagogy. Put another way, the course couples critical inquiries about textuality with practical applications of those theories into everyday life.
