How Dance Matters: A Sociocultural Framing

Introduces observing, discussing and analyzing dance through a contemporary sociocultural lens. Introduces the contemporary contexts of the dance forms currently offered in the BFA dance programs, including contemporary ballet, postmodern contemporary, Afro-Latin movement practices and hip hop. By examining where and when the dance occurs, who participates and how, and why dance matters across each of these forms, students gain a deeper understanding of what makes each dance form unique. Investigates the elements of each form that overlap with others and how dance can both ignite and reflect cultural change. Additionally, students learn to write about dance in a way that recognizes and describes key values and attributes of each dance form and articulately uses description, interpretation and evaluation to create informed perspectives of dance.
