Explores the origins of psychology and counseling psychology within the United States, including the development of psychological science and systems of psychology during the 20th century. Introduces foundational and current issues related to theories, research, practice and advocacy within counseling psychology. Critically examines past examples for domains and identifies how the field of counseling psychology has perpetuated harms to marginalized groups as well as how counseling psychology has effectively used theories, research and practice for advocacy and movement toward social justice and liberation. Students reflect on their own professional identity, values and goals and how these align with the tenets of counseling psychology.
