Communicating with Artificial Intelligence
Arizona State University Digital Immersion · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Explores the evolving landscape of human-AI interaction through the lens of communication and rhetorical theory. Students critically examine how artificial intelligence systems--ranging from chatbots, social robots, to recommendation engines--shape and are shaped by persuasive strategies, relational dynamics and public discourse. Topics include: the persuasiveness of AI, the construction of ethos, trust and authenticity in AI-mediated communication, and the cultural narratives that inform public conceptions of AI. Through case studies, hands-on analysis and creative digital projects, students interrogate the communicative roles AI plays in personal, organizational and societal contexts. Places special emphasis on understanding AI as both a rhetorical actor and a relational partner, raising questions about agency, ethics and the future of persuasion.
