Provides an introduction to the field of professional counseling and introduces students to basic counseling skills and practices. Reviews knowledge about the history and foundations of counseling, the professional identity and multifaceted role of the counselor, knowledge and understanding of the helping relationship, ethical and legal standards, introduction to various trends in counseling, professional organizations and memberships, as well as issues related to cultural diversity and social justice. Through readings, class discussions and experiential exercises, students learn foundational concepts such as active listening, empathy, the therapeutic alliance and basic counseling skills.
