Explores the manner in which bioarchaeologists study and interpret lives of past people as individuals, communities and globally. Multi-scalar course begins with an overview of the bones of the human body, followed by estimates of biological sex and age-at-death. Considers basic demographic principles, with emphasis on identifying typical death assemblages. Also illustrates the importance of contextual archaeological and historical information and how theoretical orientations can influence bioarchaeological interpretations. Illuminating identities in the past and reinforcing those of descendent communities receive attention, enriched by case studies. Final modules focus on health and disease as recorded in bones, mummification practices and tattoos, and forensic anthropology. Closes by considering how the study of disease in the past informs public health measures in times of pandemics.
