This course is the second part of a two-class sequence and builds on learning from PSY 5450 Intersectionality and You. Students should come with an understanding of concepts embedded throughtout the macro, mezzo and micro layers of society which have lasting effects on all us as well as marginalized communities. This course picks up where PSY 5450 left off by learning about other isms that are pervasive in our society, but in addition, examines how students can create an inclusive and effective practice with all people. Students expand upon a cultural autobiography and consider psychotherapy as a social instituion as well as power and powerlessness in society. Awareness work includes attention to group process in the classroom. The intention is to provide a foundation for effective and sensitive clinical and community work with people different from self.
