Catalog description

To understand how to lead in diverse communities, we need to learn to examine the complexity of leadership, followership and their practices in local settings. This learning approach requires students to apply authentic (e.g., Global South, Indigenous) rather than the traditional U.S.-centric leadership frameworks and methodologies to reduce biases and capture local leadership realities. The course explores the influence of culture and societal values on leadership theory development, questions the universality of U.S.-centric leadership scholarship, reviews culture-specific, comparative as well as multicultural and multinational leadership research, and focuses on unique local methodological approaches (e.g., Indigenous theory development). The course allows students to practice designing leadership or followership research with local and authentic cultural assumptions and frames of reference, ethical research standards, or unique approaches to rigor.
