CMHC/CFT/DT Internship & Case Consult

This course provides group consultation for DT/CMHC/CFT students’ clinical work during their internship. The internship work itself primarily consists of providing direct therapeutic services to clients in an agency setting. This work is conducted off-campus at an internship site approved by Antioch University. Students receive supervision at their internship from their on-site supervisor. Performance expectations for each intern will be built upon the prior quarter’s work. Within this developmental learning context, students will receive feedback and instruction regarding such clinical issues as individual assessment, relational/family assessment, integration of theory and practice, and the use of appropriate and ethical intervention techniques and strategies. This course represents a four-quarter series of Internship & Case Consultation I-IV. For CMHC students, the emphasis of QI is on individual assessment, QII relational/family assessment, QIII the integration of theory and practice, and in QIV on the demonstration of one’s competence in assessment, diagnosis, and counseling/psychotherapy with an emphasis on multicultural competency. For CFT students, the emphasis of the course is understanding client work in a systems context. In addition, this course sequence introduces students to the supervision/consultation process including core concepts and practices to the role of professional mental health counseling. Expanded Course Description This course is predominantly an experiential learning format. Students will learn via supervised field experience, readings, lectures, video presentations, class discussions, case presentations, simulations, and group supervision designed to develop the student’s counselor identity (CACREP Section 2.A.F). Emphasis will be on an integration of theory and practice within a multicultural framework, inclusive of learning and practicing the role of supervision. During the Case Consultation sequence, you will be required to demonstrate your integration of theory and practice in different ways dependent upon the quarter. Since graduate supervision is fluid to the emerging needs of both interns and the clients/families served, the instructor has discretion to make changes to course requirements and outline.
