Beginning Clinical Skills and Culturally Responsive Therapy

This residency/intensive course is designed to equip students with an in-depth understanding of cultural diversity in couple and family therapy practice. The course emphasizes the integration of self-of-the-therapist frameworks, fostering a deepened self-awareness in the therapist. Culture, defined broadly, will influence the lens through which we view ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, gender, socioeconomic status, age, sexual orientation, and disability. Students will confront their own cultural identities and biases, enhancing their ability to provide culturally responsive therapy. The course also delves into the exploration of intersectionality, cultural humility, power dynamics, and the impact of socioeconomic status on treatment. Art Therapy Specialization Note - Students in the AT specialization will cover CAAHEP required content, including: B.7. Art & Counseling Techniques for Working Relationships and B.10. Cultural, Social and Intersectional Diversity.
