Family Systems Perspectives: Foundational Theories in Couple and Family Therapy

This residency/intensive course is designed to cultivate the therapeutic competence of students through the exploration of systemic and relational theories in the field of couple and family therapy. With a strong emphasis on self-awareness, introspection, and the critical examination of personal influences on therapeutic work, students are guided through a range of interactive experiences to understand the foundational theories, models, and practices in the couple and family therapy field. This course includes a survey of foundational theories of couple and family therapy, including transgenerational models and structural and strategic approaches. This course introduces self-of-the-therapist frameworks, allowing students to explore their personal histories, biases, and values, and learn how to manage personal reactions during therapy. By delving into historical and contemporary systemic theories, this course provides students with a broad and deep understanding of the dynamics and complexities of couple and family therapy. Art Therapy Specialization Note - Students in the AT specialization will cover CAAHEP required content, including: A.2. Theoretical Approaches, and B.10. Cultural, Social and Intersectional Diversity.
