This course is the first phase of a three-part thesis sequence designed to guide students through the research process in athletic training. In this initial stage, students will identify a research topic relevant to the profession, conduct a comprehensive literature review, and develop a research proposal. Emphasis is placed on understanding research design, methodology, and ethical considerations in human subjects’ research along with research bias. Key areas of focus include: Selection of a research topic that contributes to the advancement of athletic training. Development of a research proposal with a clear research question, methodology, and objectives. Application of contemporary health informatics principles to search, retrieve, and use information from online and internal databases for clinical decision support. Adherence to data privacy, security, and ethical standards in research design. Formation of a thesis committee and preparation for Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. Advocacy for the profession through research that addresses clinical practice, patient outcomes, or healthcare delivery. By the end of this course, students will have a fully developed research proposal ready for review and approval, setting the foundation for the implementation of their study in Thesis II.
