Catalog description

This applied laboratory course is designed to complement ATR 5500: Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Strategies by providing hands-on experiences in assessing and treating musculoskeletal injuries through evidence-based rehabilitation techniques. Students will engage in skill development related to movement analysis, therapeutic interventions, and patient-centered care, with a focus on biomechanical principles and rehabilitation strategies. This course emphasizes practical application through simulations, clinical case studies, and collaborative problem-solving. Key areas of focus include: Hands-on assessment of human movement and gait analysis to identify biomechanical dysfunction and injury risk. Practical application of therapeutic exercises, joint mobilizations, soft tissue techniques, and proprioceptive and functional movement training. Customization and use of prophylactic, assistive, and restrictive devices, including orthotics, splinting, taping, protective padding, and casting. Development of individualized care plans using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework to guide treatment and communication. Utilization of biometrics and physiological monitoring systems to assess performance and inform rehabilitation strategies. Ongoing assessment and adjustment of rehabilitation plans using patient-reported outcomes and clinician-rated measures. Integration of health literacy and social determinants of health into patient education and engagement strategies. Promotion of culturally competent care by recognizing the impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion on patient outcomes and health disparities. Implementation of injury prevention and risk reduction programs for conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and neurocognitive disorders. Through interactive lab sessions, students will develop essential clinical competencies in biomechanical assessment and rehabilitation techniques. By the conclusion of this course, students will be proficient in designing and executing comprehensive, evidence-based rehabilitation programs that optimize patient outcomes and align with professional athletic training standards.
