Catalog description

This course provides students with their third supervised clinical experience, emphasizing the integration of general medical knowledge and pharmacological applications in athletic training practice. Students will engage in clinical rotations with physician extenders and orthopedic medical doctors, gaining hands-on experience in patient evaluation, treatment planning, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This immersive experience focuses on managing general medical conditions, administering pharmacological interventions, and applying ethical decision-making with a focus on access in healthcare delivery Key areas of focus include: Performing comprehensive patient evaluations, including general medical assessments and the management of acute and chronic conditions. Understanding and applying pharmacological principles, including medication indications, contraindications, dosing, and side effects relevant to athletic training. Developing and implementing patient-centered care plans using evidence-based practice, patient-reported outcomes, and clinical outcome measures. Collaborating with physician extenders and orthopedic medical doctors to enhance patient care and referral practices. Applying health informatics tools for documentation, coding (ICD and CPT), and ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards such as HIPAA, FERPA, and OSHA regulations. Participating in emergency care simulations and acute condition management, including cardiac, respiratory, environmental, and musculoskeletal emergencies. By the end of this course, students will have developed the clinical competence necessary to manage a wide range of medical conditions, collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals, and apply pharmacological knowledge in patient care, preparing them for advanced clinical practice in athletic training.
