Orthopedic Assessment 1: Lower Extremity

Catalog description

Students will gain comprehensive exploration of orthopedic assessment techniques and patient management strategies specific to the lower extremity, including the foot, ankle, knee, hip, low back, and abdomen. Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework, students will learn to develop integrated, patient-centered care plans that consider functional limitations, environmental factors, and individual patient needs, and social determinants of health affecting the plan of care. Course topics include: Advanced skills in patient history taking, clinical documentation, ICD coding, and use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) for improved care coordination and communication. Assessment and utilization of outcome measures to create effective care plans and establish discharge criteria that consider unique social determinants of health for each patient. Compliance with legal and ethical standards, including HIPAA, FERPA, mandatory reporting, and data security best practices. Clinical competencies in range of motion, manual muscle testing, palpation, and special testing for lower extremity conditions Application of quality assurance practices and health informatics to enhance decision-making, patient safety, and documentation accuracy. Hands-on lab sessions will allow students to develop practical skills in orthopedic assessment while practicing ethical and legal standards in simulated environments. Upon completion, students will be prepared to perform thorough assessments and implement comprehensive treatment plans that align with professional standards and best practices in patient care.
